One night in June this year, I pulled up in front of Grandma and Grandpa's house, and there they were sitting on the front porch enjoying the coolness after that day's rain. The sun was setting and there was a light fog.  I walked up to the porch and sat and talked with them.  Grandpa sat there talking with me about school, engineering, and Air Force.  He looked at me and said, "I'm proud of you, buddy."  At that time he really seemed in good health.   He had been in and out of the hospital but had been that way for a while.

A few months ago, I went to visit him in the hospital.   He said that he wanted to live to see me get my Lieutenant bars and that he had bested this leukemia before and he could do it again.

A week ago Friday, I came home from Ellsworth AFB and went over to his house.  He was sleeping on the couch.  Grandma told me I could wake him.  I woke him up and he said, "Hey buddy, I really wanted to see you become a 'shave tail'" (that's what he called second lieutenants back when he was in) "but I'm not going to be able to make it."
